            AIR RAID SHELTER TOURS AND EVENTS

The air raid shelter is open to the general public throughout the year, on the 1st Sunday of each month: February - April; September - November. Special general public tours and school tours are held during SA History Month in May.  

Special tours for schools and community groups such as Probus, Scouts, Service Clubs can be arranged by  emailing

Air Raid Shelter Opens   
Sunday September 7th,  2.00 - 4.00pm


Prospect Local History Group volunteers conduct  open days/tours of the air raid shelter, regularly throughout the year.  A  talk  will be given by a volunteer covering the history and purpose of the air raid shelter, role of the air raid wardens, as well as the future plans for the air raid shelter.  Time can be spent viewing information panels and memorabilia displays, both inside the shelter and in the surrounding garden area.   A short film is shown of civil defence personnel  participating in a training exercise on Prospect Oval in 1942. 

​Cost is a $5.00  per person, with monies received going towards the development of the air raid shelter and other PLHG activities.

Train As An Air Raid Warden
Living History Childrens' and School Event


Betty and Bert Button (fictional air raid wardens) will take you through six training exercises : "Evacuate", "Check Supplies", "Over and Out", "On Patrol", "Bandage That Head", "Find The Unexploded Bombs" to become a WW2 Air Raid Warden. Learn about the huge efforts made by ordinary people on the Homefront during WW2.

Students will be divided into 6 groups - adult volunteers will need to be provided by the school for each group.

Dates:  May, exact date to be negotiated
Length of Tour:  60 minutes 
Where: Prospect Air Raid Shelter, Willcox Avenue, Prospect Nb there are 13 steep steps to access the shelter

Cost: $2 gold coin donation from each student. Money collected will go towards the development of student resources and display items.

​Maximum 30 children plus 5 volunteers and 1 teacher

Suitable primarily for Yr 3 and Yr 6 students, linked to the Australian Curriculum
