These short essays aim to provide a brief description of each of the schools that have existed in the Prospect area and some others from ‘ just across the road’ or nearby, and to celebrate the role of early teachers who, often in difficult circumstances, battled to provide local children with at least a rudimentary education. Some early schools that are almost forgotten were dame schools which catered for young children. Others like Miss Mitchell’s, Mrs Williams’ and Riverside were more prestigious establishments. And then there was Prospect’s famous Graham’s Castle that served as a boarding school dormitory for several years.
